Recovery begins with observation, not movement. Make the firearm or bow safe, keep watching and listening, and record the exact place the deer stood and the last place it was visible. Blood is one clue among several. Color, amount, tracks, hair, shot angle and the deer's reaction must be considered together, and none of them can diagnose a wound with certainty from the field.
How to use this chart responsibly
Compare four things before deciding what the blood may mean: color, texture, amount and pattern over distance. Then add the shot angle, the deer's reaction, hair, tracks and any material on an arrow. Official recovery guides use terms such as "can indicate" and "may signal" because the patterns overlap. Lighting, wet leaves, soil and time can also change the way a sample looks.
The chart is therefore a decision aid, not a wound calculator. Its best use is to help a hunter decide whether to continue slowly, wait longer, back out or call qualified help. If the trail contradicts the original shot impression, follow the evidence rather than defending the first guess.

Light red, pink or frothy blood
Alaska Fish and Game says a lung or tracheal-area wound can produce light frothy blood, and North Carolina Wildlife describes bright bubbly or frothy blood as a possible lung sign. That makes froth useful evidence when the shot path crossed the chest. It is still necessary to look at the whole trail. Foam can be easier to see in a larger patch than in a single drop, and rain or leaf texture can create reflections that resemble bubbles.
Check the height of sign on vegetation and whether blood appears on both sides of the escape route. A horizontal pass-through can leave sign on both sides, while a downward angle may produce a higher entry and lower exit. Bright crimson or bright red blood
Bright blood has more than one possible source. North Carolina's guide associates bright crimson with arterial blood, while New York DEC notes that muscle wounds can also leave substantial bright red blood. A dramatic beginning can therefore taper quickly. The key questions are whether the amount holds over distance, where the blood sits on vegetation, whether bone or hair is present and how the deer is traveling.
Do not use brightness alone to shorten the wait or declare a heart hit. Mark the trail and observe its direction. If blood falls to occasional dots, return to the last strong clue and reassess instead of moving faster to catch up.
Dark red or maroon blood
Dark blood may be venous and can be associated with liver, kidney or muscle wounds in government recovery materials. It becomes more meaningful when paired with a rearward shot angle, a deer that hunches or slows, limited external blood, or a nearby bed. Those clues should make the decision more conservative, not more certain.
If liver involvement is plausible, review How Long to Wait After Shooting a Deer. Extending the wait may avoid moving a deer from its first bed. If a bed is found empty and appears recent, mark it and back out rather than treating the bed as proof that the deer is close.
Green or brown material, watery sign or strong odor
Partially digested vegetation, green staining or a distinctive digestive odor can indicate stomach or intestinal involvement. New York DEC explains that stomach or intestinal wounds may produce only a small amount of dark blood and that the wound can be blocked, leaving little external sign. The same guide advises at least four hours before tracking a suspected stomach hit.
Do not handle material unnecessarily. Photograph it, record the location and leave the trail quiet. Conditions such as heat or approaching severe weather complicate recovery and meat care, but they do not turn an uncertain wound into a fast-track situation. Contact a legal tracking-dog handler early if that option is available.
When blood is sparse or absent
No visible blood is not the same as no hit. Alaska's guide notes that wounds away from large vessels can produce little blood and that a high lung hit may not show externally until blood accumulates. North Carolina also notes that blood may begin several yards beyond the shot site. Search for clipped hair, disturbed ground, tracks, broken vegetation and impact evidence before drawing a conclusion.
When visual sign ends, preserve the last location and move to the systematic no-blood search plan. A controlled search provides more information than repeatedly walking the same likely-looking trail.
Read the pattern, not a favorite clue
- Amount: Is sign increasing, steady or fading?
- Spacing: Are drops close together or separated by long gaps?
- Height: Is blood on the ground, low brush or both?
- Sides: Does sign appear on one or both sides of travel?
- Movement: Do tracks show a turn, uneven stride or a bed?
- Consistency: Do hair, angle, reaction and blood support the same cautious hypothesis?
